Tai Chi for Health is a community led charity that was set up to provide Tai Chi classes to communities that might not normally have access to them. With a network of 26 trained volunteer instructors, we currently teach around 350 people every week, including the elderly in care homes, people with Parkinson’s and dementia, stroke and arthritis support groups and those simply trying to maintain their fitness.
The Tai Chi we teach is called the “Easy18 Tai Chi"©. It is a very easy exercise that can be practised standing or sitting. Tai Chi can have extraordinary health benefits because it is one of the few exercises that leaves people both energised and completely relaxed. The enjoyment of the activity releases feel good endorphins in the brain, while the easy movements increase blood flow.
A total of 26 volunteer instructors have already been trained and more are currently undergoing training. They themselves get the great reward of watching the class they teach improve dramatically after each lesson.
The project is supported by grants from a number of trusts to fund the training of the instructors. The volunteer instructors teach local groups, so there is no significant ongoing cost for the volunteer and the class is always free, but small weekly donations to Tai Chi for Health are invited to help ensure the project is sustainable.
